I have no idea who built this one but I want to build one of these soon. But I have a question for the Archie-Boys... Why are the strings held in the trapese thingy such that they are longer on the treble side and are progressively shorter as they move toward the base side? |

Z gits the Lard!!!!! Fantastic builder this Scharpach! Builds his own tuners. Gorgeous work! Makes his own tailpieces from solid brass and gold plates them! Czech out the binding in the f-holes!! Top quality work all around! Here's some more shots! Attachment: archtop_5.jpg Attachment: scharpvienna7.jpg Attachment: scharpvienna4b.jpg Scharpach has probably the sweetest sounding 12 string I've heard. Scharpach 12 This is his Dolphin SS, nice sounding too! Dolphin steel string Scharpach has many nice things on his site! |

I'm just taking a stab here Dynomite, but longer strings increase tension when brought up to tone. As AT's have a tendency to be a little mellow anyway, it may be an attempt to brighten things up. If this has an effect from the other side of the bridge, I don't know. Experts, where are the experts when you need them! |

I'll take a small bow, even though Billy got my name wrong. ( ...although feel to send the lard to "Z") re the tailpiece, I've always thought it related to the feeling that a shorter tailpiece tended to loosen up a "tight" feeling archtop. Most builders who do this (incl. Benedetto) shorten the base side, I've assumed in an attempt to reduce the apparent effort to the "whisper touch" desired by jazz players. (I could be all wet though - just my theory.) |

I apologize Dave! I saw the outstanding archtop avatar and flubbed! You know how it is with these hectic NTB contests! I already sent the lard to Z and if I know that guy there's no way he's sending it back! Serious apologies! I like your explaination for JJ. I don't have a lot of experience with AT's playing or otherwise, I just like the look of them. How did you run across this Scharpach guy? If you don't mind me asking. |

No problem Billy. I just ran across him in researching various builders & styles and was immediately impressed. You're right Hesh - it's all good (including presentation)! |

I'm sure they're nothing better than say a Joe White or Tony Ferguson does, but you add a few light boxes and a good camera and your there! You put that all together with a excellent builder and concept, it just makes everything better. Like you said Dave. What I like is the engraving on the bottom of the tailpeice and pickgaurd, top notch! The burst shading is outstanding. Does he do it or somebody else. I wasn't able to glean from the site. |
