Post subject:  Dan's First Build - Weekend Progress (pics)
I joined the top plates over the weekend and am very pleased with the result. Thanks to everyone who has ever posted about the jointing process. I think I read everything there is to read in the forum including the archives about jointing :lol: but it was worth it. I ended up using the sanding method and obtained a scrap piece of granite from a local countertop supplier. They give this stuff away BTW.

For the glue-up, I used Nigel Forster's method and found it to be very effective, so thanks Nigel for the great vids [:Y:]

The third picture is a close-up of the joint, which now I can't find. :D The Lutz just came to life when I sanded it with my ROS. You can really see the medullary rays in the close-up pic. Thanks again Shane for a great top [clap]

Looks right to me. Good job. You almost have a guitar there. Just add some sides, a back and a neck and you're done.

Hi Sam,

No, I am actually from Alabama, but I happened upon Nigels vids on YouTube and he is really the one who inspired me to do this. I literally study his videos to try and glean as much information as possible. I am amazed at how easy he makes it look. [uncle]

I am building the OLF SJ and using Lutz for the top and this Myrtle for the b/s. I haven't decided on the bindings yet but am leaning towards claro walnut, and also walnut for the rosette. The neck will be honduran mahogany laminated with myrtle (or maple) down the center and ebony. Of course, I am completely open to suggestions :D

I'd vote for curly claro. I have a set of spalted myrtle that looks very similar to yours. It has a bit more spalting on the back that looks like a bull skull, a bit evil looking. I plan on using claro for binding on it.

I really am thinking of going with the walnut. It should compliment the myrtle nicely. Thanks for the feedback.
