Not sure if this image will work or not - it's a little AVI file I put up to photobucket. Anyway, it shows the guitar body I just finished French polishing hanging from a wire on a hook. I got it rotating a little for the video. I was doing this to send the video to the guy for whom I'm building the guitar. Just after this video was taken, the wire broke and the guitar dropped to my work bench gaah . I grabbed it but, as I was still holding my camera, I put dings in the top, and scratched the back. These I can fix by stripping off the shellac, steaming the dents etc. However the maple binding between the side and the back now has a big dent that I can't do too much with. [headinwall] [headinwall]. This is the second guitar in a row I've dropped. I'm starting to think somebody doesn't want me to make guitars.

Sorry Pat that sucks. At least with a shellac finish the finish is completely repairable.

Thanks for the commiseration guys and sorry the video didn't work as planned on the first try. I've now put it up on youtube so here it is:

Incidentally, for those of you that may recall my earlier post about comparing a French polish finish to the water based lacquer....I found with care and more glazing I was able to get the French polish just as mirror-like as the lacquer.

Pat, It sounds like you have ghosts in your shop. I do also, they knock my instruments down just to keep me humble. I think that for me, it's mostly a problem of rushing things. The ghosts want the boxes to hang around longer so they can help set in the haunting sounds.

Good luck
