I'm looking for a large pattern bit (bearing on the bottom) with a spiral cutter for doing neck profiles. 1-1/2" cutting height minimum. 2" would be better. Yes, a shaper would do it but I don't need one for anything else and don't have room anyway. Do they exist? Googled for awhile and no luck yet. Is solid carbide too brittle get the required shape? |

Seems to me that you would have a problem using a pattern bit. The reason I say this is the profile should taper from the heel return radius to the peghead volute intersection. therefore if using a pattern bit on a shaper or router table the wood will continually either have less engagement with the shape of the bit as you get closer to the volute or excess as you get closer to the heel return radius. I personally cant see where a profile pattern bit really would be an efferent means of profiling a neck blank |

I'm looking for a straight bit to shape the profile from the heel to the peghead, not the cross section of the neck. What don't you like about hand shaping? I love hand shaping. I just prefer to get the bulk of the material off with machines and start final shaping with something that's already close. I absolutely love my neck building routine! Fast, precise, easily repeatable if I want, easy to adjust for different players, and a satisfying and appropriate combo of machine and hand work. |

Try the 3/4" "supercut" (or something like that name) bit from Jesada. |

Sweet!! That's exactly it.  I can't find it on ocemco's site though. Is it called something other than a router bit? The one on patwarner.com is different but looks fine. What a monster. don't know why the link doesn't work. use quick search OCEMCO spiral at carbide.com. it's technically a power plane cutter mounted on an arbor with a bearing. |
