Post subject:  Just Strung it up!

Hello All,
Thought I would share some pics of my latest guitar. I just finished last night doing the setup and final buffing. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It plays well and sound decent too.
Woods are: EIR - back and sides, Top is Englemann as well as all the braces, Mahogany neck, Maple bindings, Ebony FB and Bridge.
The shape is what I came up with after blending a dreadnought shape with a Gibson J-200 shape, making adjustments and tweaking curves to get the final shape. The neck turned out to be a little fatter than what I was aiming for, but it's still comfortable and easy to play, but this is obviously and area I will try and work on for future builds.

I welcome your comments, critiques, questions etc...

Awesome guitar. Unfortunately I have no useful critiques, but just wanted to pass along that I love the shape of the body. What are the dimensions of the box?

Anyone can create their own shape. Not many can do it successfully. You did. Beautiful instrument.

Elegant in all aspects. I love the shape of the body, the bound neck with minimal, but cool markers and the rosette especially. Really excellent stuff.

Wow guys, It's certainly nice to get this kind of positive feedback, thank you all very much!
It certainly encourages me to keep building. I probably won't do much building over the summer (too busy and too humid anyway) but I'll do all the prep and design work to start #'s 3 and 4 in the fall.

Cheers!

Goob!
That's one great looking guitar!
NICE TIGHT neck joint! That says a LOT to me!
Clean joinery, nice finish and the bridge is very tasteful!
Nice rosette, man what's not to like! A+!

Hows she sound?

hi Goobie
I’ll reiterate what every one else has said - great job.
you said the shape was
“blending a dreadnought shape with a Gibson J-200 shape”
well I can just about see that, it’s certainly elegant as is the rest of the guitar.
I’m a sucker for understated elegance.
What Lance said - how does it sound?
yours Geordie

In an attempt to answer Lance and Geordie... The sound is, in a word, LOUD. I guess with a large-ish body that is to be expected. I also expected that it would be really boomy in the low end, but it's not. The bass is actually pretty tight, and what really surprised me is the clear highs. Kind of the opposite of what I expected it to sound like. Don't get me wrong, I think it sounds really good but if someone with voicing/re-voicing experience wanted to, I think they could coax more bass out of it. But, I actually really like the balanced tone I'm hearing so far.
I really like playing fingerstyle on it.

Some of you might remember I had asked some questions about the top for this guitar a few months ago. I was concerned that it was a little too thin.. I ended up doing a sound hole doubler in stead on traditional sound hole braces and a slightly wider than "normal" maple bridge plate to sort of compensate. I'm not sure what role that ended up playing in the overall sound, but I'm sure it plays it's part.

Cheers,
Chad

Good job Chad! I like the shape and the bridge.

Hey Dave,
Well.. It does get pretty humid here in the summer, but yeah, I could build if I really needed to. I have a room in my basement that is humidity and temperature controlled. I store all my wood, work in progress and do most of my glue up in there. But I prefer to work in my garage shop that is not climate controlled. It can get pretty sticky in there in the summer.

Cheers,
Chad

Great shape, Chad, a lot more elegant than a J-200 or a Dred. As has been stated by others, the work is really clean. What do you think of your tail graft? I seems a little big to me. Otherwise, I like everything about it. I have to dehumidify in the winter, kind of the opposite of your problem. I throw water on the concrete floor in the summer.

Post subject:  Re: Just Strung it up!

Hey Ken,
Thanks for the comments. Yeah it sure seems like we live in opposite climates! In the winter here it gets bone dry (and COLD) so I have to humidify, and do the opposite for summer.

As for the tail graft, you might have a point.. I never really spent much time figuring out the angle of the wedge, just kinda set the t-square at an angle and went for it. What DOES bug me a little about the end wedge, is that is was a piece of highly figured maple and I ended up getting a little of the tinted pore filler stuck in it that I just couldn't get out. If you look real close at the top right and the bottom left corners of the wedge you can see a little of the coloration in there, also in the joint of the top binding. Not a huge deal but it does bug me.

Cheers,
Chad
