I am considering using my SM Dovetail plates with a straight cut router bit to produce a dovetail shaped mortise & tenon bolt-on neck joint.
Has anyone done this? Just wondering if it would differ much from the straight M&T joint.

I'm sure it would work for a bolt on, but I see no reason to do it. Straight mortise and tenons are just cut to a particular width, and bam - you're done. It fits and holds the neck straight and center, no more fussing. With a straight dovetail in the orientation your talking about, you would still have to go through a lot of work either hand fitting the joint, or a whole lot of extra work in setting up the templates so the sides mated just as the fingerboard meets the body. No advantages, and lot's of inconveniences from where I see it.

Thanks David, that's the kind of feedback I was wanting. For some reason thats one point that I just didn't think of , but it makes perfect sense.

What are the advantages of a dovetail over a mortise and tenon bolt on type neck?

It's very similar to the advantages an apple has over an orange - or is it the orange having advantages over the apple? I forget....
