Post subject:  Tape For Tent Joining Technique?

Can anyone recommend a particular kind of tape that that would work for joining plates using the tent joining technique explained in Hesh's plate joining tutorial? I know that he uses Stew Mac brown binding tape, but i was wondering If there is a tape that would work that could be purchased at a local (not so well stocked) hardware store. Thanks.

Tent jointing does not require extreme adhesion so a good quality masking will work. Heck I have even use the 2” wide 3m Blue painters tape. After all it is stops on the sides of the plates that gives the clamping pressure the tape just holds the alignment till you are pressed down in place.

I use binding tape as well, with a bit of tension in it. The tape is what pulls the joint together with this method.

Thanks everyone for helping out. I went with the 2" blue painters tape. I'll pick up some of the Stew Mac Binding Tape in the near future.

Question: How long do you wait before cleaning the glue on the tape side (the side facing down)? It's been drying now for about 1/2 hour. Thanks again.

Well, I got the top joined and it seems to be ok, but I'm not 100% sure because of the glue squeeze out along the seam on the side that was taped.

I don't have a thickness sander or access to one, so does anyone have any tips for removing the glue squeeze out along the seam so that i can better evaluate the joint?

Thanks for all the tips.

Hi Ron,

Use a cabinet scraper to remove the glue squeeze. You don't want to sand the plate until the glue is removed.
