does anyone have a source for tapered reamers? i need 1 three degree and a 5 degree, thanks Jody

I believe LMII and Stewmac carry them. I got one from Stewmac and it works great.

Jody buddy I have both the 5 and 3 degree reamers from Stew-Mac and although they are pricey they are excellent and work perfectly.

i had seem reamers for considerably less (like $17.00) long ago .upon a returning to the site they were furniture makers reamers.... LOL Jody

I've bought and tried about every 3 and 5 degree reamer out there, sold for this trade or others, and can assure you the StewMac ones are worth every penny. I have their 2, 3, 5, and endpin hole reamer, and they are all well worth the money. The one disappointment I have is that their 5 degree reamer has been downsized a bit - the old ones had a slightly greater large diameter, which came in handy for some occasional jobs that the new ones can't do.

Yup, reamers are another tool where buying cheap ones costs more because you end up buying the good ones anyway after you find out what a crappy job the cheap ones do. Martin sells a particularly crappy one, just like in the cheap HW stores, only it costs more. DAMHIKT.

Here is a picture of the crappy Martin/hardware store one, an LMI reamer that BTW did not come with an handle and I did a bit of over kill in selecting one for it....... and the Stew-Mac reamer.

Anyone tried the ones from Grizzly?

I have those (so I've tried them) and think they work great. Just wondering how they compare to the others. I believe I got a set of 3 for about $45 (which I believe is about the price of 1 from elsewhere).

well in my impatience I ordered the lmi , they do come with handles though , pricing is all over the place on many of the tools we need , sometimes with equal quality , sometimes not . I tried a search on grizzly for the reamers , the first time they didnt come up ,now they do . I did buy some cam clamps from grizzly , they did not work so well, so now I am nervous about buying anything from them , without a reccomendation ... thanks jody

I think Grizzly is phasing out the reamers. The 5 deg isn't there anymore and the peghead one is on sale for $10. They used to have 3 pack.

I have the Griz 3º. I would say it is just adequate. Not in the same league as my Stew-Mac 5º.

I agree, the 3º Grizzly has only one flute, and not super sharp at that, and it's difficult to be accurate. The SM are much better quality.

The herdim reamers from dik fine tools in germany are by far the bet taperd reamers you can IMHO.

I have the Stewmac 3 and 5 degree reamers and I like them very much, they are much better than the single fluted reamer I bought from LMI some years ago. However, none of them cut as cleanly as my spiral violin peg reamer, but it's taper is 1/30 or approximately 2 degrees, so no good for guitar pins. If you can find a spiral reamer that matches your bridge pin taper that's probably the ultimate.
