Post subject: | Opinions sought on LMI's Instrument Makers White Glue |
Hello everyone I have been using Titebond Original and Cabinetmaker's Glue 2002 GF (from Lee Valley) for guitarmaking for years, with very good results (Snakewood bindings is the only wood that I have had problems with when using those glues). With a recent order from LMI, I decided to give their glue a try. It is a polyvinyl glue (like the one from Lee Valley), but I noticed that it quite more liquid in state. I would just like to know if any of you guys has any experience with these different glues and how the LMI compares to the other ones. I would also appreciate any specific quirks that apply to the LMI glue before I start using it on a commissionned instrument. Cheers, Pat |

Pat Buddy LMI White Glue is great stuff. I used it anywhere that I would use Titebond and it worked great. IMHO it dries a bit harder than Titebond which is attractive in instrument building. Quirks: It can smell sour after 6 months and should not be used for instruments but use it for jigs or what ever. LMI indicates that it has a 6 month shelf life and should be stored in the fridge between uses. I would have used it more than Titebond if I could have remembered to order it while ordering from LMI..... |

I think it is great. You will have slightly less open time with it than you do titebond -- sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes not. Some folks will say that have had problems with joint failure, but I have been using it pretty regularly for 3 or 4 years and never had a problem. I can usually get something closer to a year out of it before it gets that sour smell, but I try to keep a fresh bottle running through every 6 months or so just to be safe. |

I like it too. I had one bad bottle which must have frozen during shipping. It left a white residue after curing and most of those joints failed. Every other bottle has been great. If I get a bottle during the winter now I will do one test smear to see if it dries clear or with the residue, if clear you are good to go. Fish glue is another great option and works similarly but with much better initial tack (which I love). |

I have been using it well over 5 years, and have never had an issue. I love the stuff. I also had a bottle freeze, I called Chris and he sent me another right out! I keep one on the bench and one in the fridge. |

I've used it for a couple of years now and I like it very much also. I use it on the neck and tail block glue ups to the sides, the kerfed linings and to glue the top and bottom to the rim. My big gripe is remembering to order a bottle when I'm making a order from LMII. |

Love the stuff!!! I have used it for years without a problem! If I need more open time I use fish glue! BUT-if you use a water base finish either seal the wood with shellac of use Titebond 3 cause the water in the finish will react to a water base glue line-except # 3 Mike |

I don't like it, it leaves a wierd white residue, it only lasts 6 months or more if you frefridgerate, I would tough it out and use Hot Hide Glue. Get a bottle, stainless nuts, baby bottle heater. Its a bit insane with the short open time, but I think its worth it in the end. Dont use a brush get the bottle. |

I love the stuff too. It's great. It does have a smell that is similar to Elmer's white glue though . If I recall, didn't one of the older guitarbuilding books (Sloane maybe?) recommend using Elmer's white glue in some areas? It may or may not be the same stuff, but I'd like to know. |

No failures so far. I love it. Use hide on joining top and back and all braces and bridge now but still use LMI for end blocks, kerfed lining and attaching top and back. Up until a few guitars ago used it for everything. Highly recommended. Terry |
