Any good mags for Guitar building or any stringed instrument for that mater? I've done a few searches but don't come up with anything. A few months ago there was a few neat articles in Premier Guitar, but I am not sure that is always the case.

Anyone?

Joe

'American Lutherie' from the GAL and 'Guitar Making' from ASIA

Both of these organizations are worth supporting and the quarterly mags come with membership.

That's "Guitarmaker" from ASIA.

I managed to let my ASIA subscription lapse this year ... for those of you still in, have they published any magazines this year?

Yes, but the sense of perpetual struggle to survive continues ...

Opening the cardboard mailer for Fretboard Journal is like Christmas 4 times a year. The magazine just keeps getting better and better.
For luthiers, Jean Larrivee, Rick Turner and Kamaka Ukes in the new issue. Some stuff about players too! laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe

American Luthier maintains its high standards too - Al Carruth's discourse on side ports in the most recent issue!

As nice as fretboard Journal is ... it doesnt have much about actual guitar building as compared to a GAL or Guitarmaker. There is always a nice acrticle about a maker, but you likely wont learn much about how they do something.

Lutherie as a magazine .... too few people to pay for it, and even fewer still who will contribute articles

I'll give you that, but I can't think of any magazine that gets deeper into the relation between the players and their instruments, and the qualities that go into them, or does it with such style. It is just a darned fine publication.

Darn fine it is Jim .. but for my money, I prefer Vintage Guitar .. I simply enjoy it more.

I agree. I really enjoy reading about the people behind the guitars. That article on Kim Walker was just awesome. (I just got my new one today, so I haven't read those articles yet.)

I agree it is like xmas 4 times a year. But Tony is right, you won't get much "how to" in the fbj.

AG has been getting more and more into featuring independent builders. The last issue had John How and his terrific guitars and Paul Woolson and his road trip guitar. The industry is changing, agree with me or not, we may be a fly on the arse of the industry but it's clear to me that we are becoming a more irritating and larger fly....
