Nope, those are solid. It reminds me of my drum-making days :)

Those are solid "staves," glued into 20 sideogons, mounted to a lathe, then turned on the inside and out. The final outer diameter is important, but the part that gave me the most trouble when I made one of zebrawood was clamping the 20 sided "ring."

James, they were referring to the Brazilian rosewood part...which looks to be a veneer over a solid hoop. But maybe not. Can't really say for sure.

It could be or could not be, but a popular style of snare building is to cut Jenga-sized blocks, glue them together, and then round the shell on a lathe. You can see others like it on this site: http://www.jtpercussion.com/rawshells.html although the shells are vertical staves, not horizontal segments.
