I am finishing an intensive advanced guitar building course with a couple of students and thought I would post pics of their guitars. No drueling please!

This advanced class had two students. I called it advanced because you had to have built at least a couple of guitars to be eligible. It was for those wanting to take their guitars to the next level. With a small number of students we are able to address areas in depth such as top voicing, binding installation, finishes etc. I taught this class at my personal shop. It was a 10 week course and we met twice a week for 3 hours.

Frei, Boulder is just a hop, skip and a jump from Lakewood where I offer classes at Red Rocks College. I have guys coming in from all over the state of Colorado and a few moving in from out of State. There are still a few places available in my Thursday night Steel string class. Why don't you sign up? It will begin late August and run for 16 weeks. If you would like to get on my contact list I can also inform you of when I will be holding weekend workshops and also master classes with Kent Everett.

In this advanced class we did go ahead and finish the guitars in class. One is a cat urethane and the other is a French polish.

In my regular guitar building classes at the college we discuss finishes in detail over the 16 week course. I bring in examples and then I have my students do a hand applied finish. This can be either French polish, tru oil, varnish etc. These hand applied finishes are actually very appealing if done properly.

That classical is actually the best set of Tiger Myrtle I have ever seen. It almost looks as though it should have neon bindings and fuzzy dice hanging dfrom the peghead!

I have a pre-requisite for cutaways. You must have already built at least one and preferably two guitars with me before attempting a cutaway guitar. Let's walk before we run, right? If someone comes in with experiece in guitar building I have been known to let them attempt a cutaway on their first guitar with me. This is very rare though.
The good thing about offering my classes at the college is that folks can take them over and over again. The college pricing makes these very affordable for the local guys here. Even with out of state tuition it is cheaper than taking an intensive course somewhere. You get 8 hours of my instruction for 16 weeks plus access to the shop and tools over 40 hours a week to work on your project. I have some students that have built over six guitars with me and there is no sign of slowing down.
