| Post subject: | headstock design mistake, is there a remedy? |
Hi all, I'm on my second bass guitar now. I'm doing a 5 string this time. I really liked the headstock design of my 4 string one that I did last time so decided to copy it. Planning it out on paper I figured it would work for 5 bass tuners, but I didn't account for enough space between the knobs so had to space it out a bit more. I just finished drilling the holes, put in the tuners and oh! it looks like the D string is going to have to past straight through the G string's post! woops! I envision some kind of string guide, like a roller mounted on a vertical shaft. Is such a thing available? I looked at stewmac's website and allparts but the string guides are all the type that pull the string down, not to the side. There has been alot of mistakes on this bass so at this point I'm not freaking out or anything. I see it as a learning experience. I'm just bummed I'm going to end up with a guitar that I'm too embarrassed to show anyone, Stefan |

If it were me .. i would chop off the part with the tuner holes, and glue on a larger piece, such that I could redesign a headstocak that works ... One of my early early electrics had a factory strat style neck and headstock glued ontot the body I made .. I didnt like the headstock shape at the time, so I chopped the top and bottom off, leaving only a small triangle section about three inches long. laminated on two other pieces, and turned it into a reverse jackson style .. with a back taper as well, no string trees ..... still in use. |

Thanks guys, I've now taken off the headstock plate, I will plug the holes when I get a plug cutter next week (this way I can get the correct grain orientation). then will saw off and plane the sides of the headstock and glue on wings, and be on my way to finishing it. I would just plain saw off all the holes I drill but this would mean cutting into the bubinga laminates. I think I can make this mistake disappear. Thanks for the advice, Stefan |

Stefan, If you don't want to deal with matching grain on the plugs, this might be a good time to try plates on both the top and bottom of the head. just and idea. d |
