Im building an electric bass. The piece of ash im using has dark some weird dark looking grains. Kind of like a mix of brown, peach, purple like grains. I researched it online and i think its black ash. Does anyone know if this is a good piece of ash to be using? or does anyone know the sound characteristics of this piece? |

That sure looks like Swamp ash .Is it light in weight? The stained boards usually are. Swamp ash is an outstanding choice for a bass. You get tight lows and highs with a scooped mid response , good sustain ,good quick response. The light stuff is also pretty soft so be leery of over torquing and stripping out screw holes .The grain is very open and requires a light touch when sanding to avoid ripples in your contours. I like the stain, it adds to the look for me. Hope that helps, good luck Brett |
