I love that stuff! If I remember right, it has a real glassy tap tone as well...

Good grief that's pretty.
I think you should frame that, Todd, and hang it prominently in your shop.
And the next customer that sees that, and wants it, you can tell him/her that it will cost out the wazoo. They are getting art, afterall, and not just wood.

Steve

P.S.--good luck with the mat decision.

Nice piece there Todd! Should make some mighty fine fingerboards though it's almost a shame to put fret slots/frets into it. Got any upcoming fretless commissions? beehive

i sell stuff like that for fingerboards and bridges but its so expensive now its a real luxury item.

there are two countrys where zirocote grows in quantity and only one that exports the stuff and that one has recently banned all exports.

so its gonna be very very expensive in the future (like all the woods we like to use gaah ).

so much so that i wont bother buying now becouse it would make the price of the sets prohibative.

That said i sell alot of for fingerboards an will pick up small boards of the stuff if the price is right.
electric guitar a bas makers love it but its quite blingy for an acoustic.

there is no doubt its a beutyfull wood but just another one to add to the "rare" wood list.

Joel.

Don't forget four piece backs with this stuff. The grain is cool, and really makes clean matching easier. Good way to get an amazing looking set of top notch well quartered wood.

Joel, can you expand on what you'e saying? What countries? Mexico is one. Yucatan peninsula, where's the other?

So are you saying that it is in the "that's all there is" kind of category? I desperately want a set or 2 just to build for myself

I've got one too! I have spent more time looking at this board than any other, it looks like a moon landing or something to me. I actually really might slice off the face veneer and frame it.

yes it comes out of mexica and guatamala.

guatamala does not export the stuff in any great quantity,s the stuff you see on the market is from mexico.

mexico has recently put put export restrictions on a number of woods.
good ol' crackwood being one and i am sorry to say cocobolo being another.
(i cant good coco at the right price anywhere gaah )

zirocote was never a very common wood anyway and as such has allways been expensive.

i wouldent worry to much about not being able to get the a set or two though as the big guys in the states should have plenty stock piled.

its just i know that the european suppliers (nagle etc) are chraging prices so high when they have it that it makes it not worth buying.
The same with amazon rosewood and many other nice woods from central america.
it may be ploy by the mexican government to drive up prices but with the amount of exotics that come out mexico its hardly a suprise that the woods are getting rarer.

that said i do have some stashed stocks that i am holding on to for a while to see what happens to the market.

i am sure hibdon, and such can get good stocks at present so you should be able get some for a while yet.
but i know some of the american dealers buy there wood through germany so they will be having the same problems as me in this regard.

it will be a while before you see the supply problems trickle down to the end user especialy in the states becouse of the stock piles so dont go panic buying just yet.

I hope that makes you feel better,

Joel.

I really love the look of Ziricote, I'm finishing up two guitars with Ziricote backs and sides and Port Orford cedar tops and they both will be killer guitars!! I also found out I'm allergic to the Ziricote, so if Your going to use it be careful when sanding!! [uncle]
