Post subject:  Looking for American Red Gum and yew

Hi guys,

I was wondering if any of our sponsors have American Red Gum and yew or if anyone had a source of either woods for back and sides?

I've been looking for some for some time!

Warmest regards,
Terence

Maybe check with a traditional bow making forum or such(archery) as yew is the preferred wood for traditional bows, if the size isn't right this would be a good time to practice your jointing skills...

You might inquire into the availability of liquidambar (red gum), as this is the common name used in the southeast and southwest. These trees are all over southern cal and wood can be found at many firewood lots.

Check out www.hoganhardwoods.com for America Red Gum. They have locations in Arkansas, Louisiana and Florida.

Also check out this site for Red Gum. You might find a wide board quartersawn at this company.

Liquid ambar is called red gum? I think more than one wood gets called red gum; here in CA we use it for a common eucalyptus, and I think the Aussies use it for a couple of eucalyptus species. I have worked with liquid ambar, and I do not see any special value for it in guitar making.

Thank you all kindly for the leads- thanks to Larry who took the trouble to look through his wood pile to try to find what I was looking for!
