Hey everyone! I hope I posted this in the right section. I'm not a luthier, but I really hope that one of you could share your expert opinion on my situation. I found a guitar (ca. 1980) that I would love to buy, 1,000 miles away, but the owner pointed out a crack on the back of the neck, saying that he thinks that "when they routed the groove for the adjusting rod in the neck is that they either routed it too deep or sanded the neck too close to the groove and there is a spot about 1/2 an inch long where, even though it hasn't completely broken, the wood has sort of caved in just a bit." ![]() ![]() ![]() The dark wood (walnut) runs through the entire guitar, so I couldn't just replace it. So, I'm wondering... is this something that will get worse? Is it nothing to worry about? or is this a guitar i should stay from? Thanks for any help! |

I think the seller is right about that. I also think you should find another guitar - stay away. |

I have seen this before on a guitar with the neck profile shaped to thin/shallow and then it cracked when the truss rod had been adjusted. As Steve says - stay away from it. |

Yep .. had one just like that in my shop for an evaluation a year ago ... owner used a capo on 5th quite a bit and it eventually broke the wood fibres ... neck was simply carved too thin by the maker. Its done for .... |
