Post subject:  Troubled Top--

while trying to flush my rosette to the top I gouged the top right below the rosette. I thought I could just sand the the gouge out witch I did accomplish. The problem is that I sanded the radius right out of it. The top was only radiused to 30' and the braces are fine. When I was looking at the placement for the bridge it looks as if the top has sunk down about 1mm in the center of the bridge. The top hasnt sunk I think I just sanded the top flat in that area. Will it be ok to go ahead to try to shap the bridge to fit or will this problem just get worse.

Thanks

Is this top on a guitar?
-check your top thickness and then decide what to do .
Which would be remove the braces & rebrace with the 30'arch.
Or if it's to thin -chock it up to experience-you may be able to save the rosette .

ugggg. I didnt want to hear that. How would re-radiusing the braces fix it if they are radiused right now?
Thanks for your help Mike. This learning experiences are getting time consuming.

I thought I read somewhere in the forum that if the shape will return to the top as long as the braces are radiused properly. Do I just have a serious case of the wishful thinking?

Re -radiusing will not help if the top is to thin.
That's why i said to check the thickness first!
Your radius is still there but not measurable.
You'll have to level the outside of the top before rebracing!

Sorry to be unclear on that!
Do you have more tops??

Mike

Good luck!

Ok, that makes sense, I am just a little slow. I do have more tops I just hope I can get the braces off without tearing it up.
Thanks

Do you have a thickness sander?
if not use a sharp plane to get them close to the top and then carefully sand or scrape them to the top !

I'd save the rose and put it in another top!

No, thickness sander. That is next on my wish list. I have been using a wagner saf-t-planer or a flat dish. I will give it a shot. I was just letting my last coat of crystalac set up before the final set up. This is a bummer
Thanks Mike!

How do you sand the radius out of top?? idunno

Post subject:  Re: Troubled Top--

I can screw something up quite easily. I first had sanded the gouge to what I thought was a safe level. After building a 30' sanding block i then tried to sand the radius back over the gouge but it was too far gone. So then I just sanded everything down even and waaaLA~ flat spot from rosette to bridge plate. If anyone needs a tutorial just PM me. laughing6-hehe

Todd if those are anything like encylopedia bretanica they will sit on your bookshelf and never be looked at again, so I guess what I am saying is I will take those copies off your hands for half price [:Y:]

Actually i own several sets already. This will be the 4th top on this guitar. First one I didnt radius at all, second the bridge plate was out of line, third the radius, so if there is anything else I can screw up If one of you pros can let me know before hand I sure would appreciate it.
By the way that was great Todd, that cracked me up

This thread doesn't make any sense to me. Are you saying you braced the top then installed the rosette? If so I don't see how redoing the braces will change anything. The braces and underside of the top are still radiused and that's what's important. If the top isn't too thin why not just sand the outside of it in the dish and leave the braces alone?

Sorry, my top was radiused to 30', while I was scraping my rosette I cut a hole or gouged below my rosette. I tried to sand it out and while doing that I took the arch out of the top. I sanded it to far down and screwed everyting up. This is my first and I am trying to make every single mistake I can on it so from here on out I will only produce perfect outstanding guitars. Watch out world, when I finally finish this one ( 2-3 more years) I am taking you by storm. [headinwall]

I set my rosette and braced my top. Then I put the top on and was cleaning it up (which I should have done before bracing). While I was scraping it I gouged out a pretty big chunk out of the top right below the rosette. So then I was trying to fix it by sanding it out. I just messed up. I sanded it to far down and took the arch out of the top. Shouldnt have got in such a hurry.

Its not a screw up, you've just invented the flat/radiused guitar top!

oops_sign

If your going to take braces off and keep the top, be very very careful....very careful.. :geek:

Jeremy had the point of what I was looking for. I couldnt measure my top because I was at work. My low point is 2.21 mm. Can I radius this thing out in my dish or just rip it and start over.

Post subject:  Re: Troubled Top--

I'd just start over. It would problably be less time consuming, and easier to do. Less problematic, too. By the time you get everything straight on this particular top, you may end up with it being too thin and have to start over anyway.

Post subject:  Re: Troubled Top--

If your top is still 2.2mm thick at the low spot I wouldn't replace the top. I would use a small sanding block and blend the edges into the middle. I would not worry about having a perfect 30 ft radius, just try to eliminate any obvious dip.
Like people , there are no "perfect" guitars in this world.
