Howdy folks! I'd like to build this Ukulele kit from Stewmac. I have a lot of woodworking/cabinet making experience and am very familiar with various tools. However, I currently don't have access to alot of tools. I have access to a table saw, drill press and various small hand tools. But I don't have a router or flush trimmer. What alternative tools can I use inplace of a router? I won't be putting binding on this instrument, so I guess I just need to trim the back/front with something..? I know without some tools the job will take longer to complete. Time I have plenty of, money for tools, I have none of.. Thoughts/suggestions? any hints you can give me that I may not have thought of yet? http://www.carrotcreek.com/ukulele/ukulele_draft.htm link to the kit/instructions. thanks. |

I live in a apartment too and I am not using any power tools. The LMI gramil is great for cutting binding chanels, it's about 50$ and works like a charm. And it can be very easily converted into a rosette router in about 15 mins of work. |

For trimming the overhang on the top and back you could use a chisel, small block plane and sandpaper to get it flush with the sides. Thats what i used, and i have a PC router, but didn't trust using it being inexperienced with power tools. It will take longer, but like you, I have plenty of time. Ron M. |

Maybe you already have one but a Spokeshave is easy, fast and give you great control. You could pick one up used for $10 or $15 . Link |

Many Mexican luthiers use a "cuchillo" knife for a lot things like trimming the tops and backs. http://www.frets.com/FRETSpages/Luthier/Technique/ToolUse/KnifeTechnique/knifetech02.html |

Another cheap way to trim the spuce overhang is with a coping saw blade. No worries about grain hangup. |
