Hi everyone. I'm starting the build of my first classical, using an LMI serviced kit. I already own a really nice spruce top guitar, so I ordered a cedar top. I am not concerned about making a detailed copy of the Hauser. I want a nice small light guitar with the warmth of cedar. Am I making a mistake by using cedar for the top? Should I order a spruce top. Again, I'm not concerned about making an accurate replica of the Hauser. I just want a nice sounding instrument with the warmer tone of cedar. I am using EIR back and sides. Looking forward to your comments.

Sounds like you have already made up your mind. A Hauser, is a small bodied classical, and may not give you the same warmth in a Cedar top as a larger body might, but I do not know that. Personally, I would choose spruce for that type of guitar. Actually, I would probably choose spruce for any classical guitar, but, again, that's just my preference.

I have just finished a IRW/WRC Hauser. It is still breaking in. I find the overall sound fabulous bass through midrange and is acceptable so far on the high end but I have to admit I would liked a bit better bell like ring the high notes. This was only my second Hauser so I am sure I could have done better but I believe these guys have a point on using Euro Spruce on a Hauser. I suspect It would have produced a crisper, clearer high end that Cedar as a general rule.

as it is relivent to the topic I should have mentioned that I built off the 1947 plans not the 1937

I believe the differences are small.

Hate to be the fly in the pie!
But the cedar your using is very important !
Is it a flexible-top-or a stiff top?
Or in between?

There is NO reason NOT to use cedar !
UNLESS you want to make an exact copy!!!

Hauser III has used cedar for Hauser guitars!
So judge your wood and make a guitar based on your judgements!

A cedar top '37 model Hauser is one of the best sounding guitars I have ever played. All the Hauser builders (I, II, & III) have made some phenominal cedar top guitars. I have a real Hauser III arriving within the year and almost went with a cedar top for that. If you want a warmer, traditional spanish sounding guitar in a smaller bodied guitar, you can't go wrong. The bracing on the '37 Hauser is very forgiving and it is not that hard to get a great sounding guitar for your first try. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Llive and learn! Everything I have read about Hauser I, extolled him for his use of spruce. I have, however, only seen a few, and played only one, which was among the last that Hauser Sr built in the year he died.
