Hello All, My name is Rob Aud, and this is my first guitar build. I am new to the luthier world, so I have learned from many mistakes. I became interested in wood working many years ago when I was employed at a furniture company and quickly advanced to become their pattern maker. I started playing guitar at the age of 12 with a love of all music, so it only made sense that the two loves of my life collided and turned me into a budding luthier. Take a look at my first accomplishment and feel free to coment. |

Rob, nice work for our first as others have said. I really like he headplate and the back is sweet. I am getting just a glimpse of the back of your headstock. Looks like there might be some adhesion problem there. Otherwise that is a great finish for a first guitar. |

Thank you all for your kind words. Since this was my first attemp in the luthier world, I was quite reluctant to show off my work. I was urged by my neighbor to post it because he was so impressed, so there it is. As for the questions that were asked, I will try my best to answer them for you. To Fiddlernut; All materials used are wood. I used what I thought was the most beautiful Black Walnut I had ever seen for the back and sides, obviously. The top is made of Engleman Spruce binded with flamed Maple and has the same for the purfling and rosette along with Black Walnut. The headstock is overlayed with a burl Walnut. The logo with my name is also flamed Maple. That took a few attemps to make, but I had a lot of fun making it. To azimmer1; Let me just say this about doing the finish. GEEEEEZZZZZZZ!!!!!! If there was ever any step in the making of this guitar that truly tested my patience, it was the finish. I had never fishished anything in my life. All I had ever done was to just design a piece, build it and then send it on to a finish department. My hat goes off to all you expert finishers. That was a trial, but I did learn quite a bit. The one thing that I did have going for me is I DO know how to use sandpaper. LOL, yes, I am QUITE versed in the art of sanding now. I'll just tell you the finish is Nitro with a Vintage Amber toner. I'm sure all you professionals out there will know what that means. To Rothrock; ROTFLMAO!!!!! Are you kiding, I'm still out of breath from this one. Number 1 took 9 months. FOOTNOTE: as for my little oops on the back of my headstock, the tuners will cover it. |

I would say that 9 months is a pretty good time, for a first. It took me a year. Actually, a little over a year, to completely finish. We are proud folks, here at OLF, but we post some of our mistakes as well as our finished guitars. Most are not afraid of chiming in and posting pictures when we are having a problem. One does not get criticized for making a mistake or, "Learning Opportunity", as I prefer to call them. I had lots on my first too. I'm having even more on my #'s 2 & 3. |
