I'm closing on a new house next week and the previous owners finished TOO much of the basement, in fact, they finished all of it except for some small storage around the furnace. Eventually I'm going to reconfigure the basement and throw the extra carpet away anyhow. Aside from making sure the the power tools are stable on concrete, are there any other major concerns? I have dust collection, a large air filter, as well as a good vacuum. I won't have time to redo the basement for at least a year, but am thinking I could at least get the shop up and running. Anybody else have a carpeted shop? Cheers! John |

John my last shop was a spare bedroom in a condo and was carpeted.... with white carpet..... When I decided to use this room as a shop I was going to rip the carpet out and the floor was concrete slab underneath. Then it occurred to me why rip it out and pitch it when I can use and enjoy it (much easier standing around on carpet) and then pitch it. What happened was just that, I left the carpet and amazingly it did not suffer except for a place that I dripped HHG on it. That steamed out when I got the carpet cleaner out. My new shop will have no carpet in the main shop with all the power tools but I will also have a carpeted "clean" area for set-ups, repairs and hanging out on the OLF when I should be building. If your new place has carpet with a low nap and vacuums easily and well you might want to consider leaving some of it where it makes sense for you. |

I have carpet remnants. They've saved my feet, back, and a few edges on chisels. With the dust collector, it's not too difficult keeping the carpet relatively clean. I do take them out and give them a good beating  once in awhile, which might not be an option for your situation.Pat |

The house is perfect except for the basement which is large, but doesn't have an unfinished area for a shop. There's a carpeted 10x17 room and a carpeted 15x10 workout room that can be used as a shop. I kept thinking of the the comments about "Hesh built in a bathroom" as I was contemplating the new house. I haven't been around here much lately because of the busy move schedule coming up, but as soon as we're in our new house next week, there'll be plenty of posts about how to best fit a crap load of power tools into a couple of storage rooms. For better or worse, this is my "shop" at the moment. The area under the bench is now stuffed with boxes full of tools & scrap. Note the Persian rug. Nice touch, huh? http://bp2.blogger.com/_jimCSw8cXX0/R_- ... kbench.JPG By the way, has anyone else been unable to post pictures or is it just me? |

My shop has Guatemalan woven rugs and other remnants all over it. Sure is a pain to sweep  But I sure do prefer standing on them.
