You could make a bunch of radius sanding blocks for shaping fretboards,
head blocks, tail blocks, or use it for jigs.
Door stop maybe

I was at a lumber yard this morning and found this. I only picked it up because I was curious as to what kind of wood it was. It was black as diesel soot. Dug my knife into it and WALLA....Cherry. I asked the yard manager about it and they just burn them or toss them into the dumpster...so I got it. After cleaning it up on the power tools it's 46"L x 3.5 x 3.5 Here's the problem. The pith of the tree (u can see in one of the pics) it was cut from runs thru this blank...and not in a straight line....plus the checks on the end run up to 5 inches, so I don't think it could be used for neck blanks. I am think LOTS of binding... What do you think? Thanks in advance guys! Chris |

Judging by the dimensions and images this looks to be a good old fashioned lumber bunk. Lumber yards use these guys between the stacks to stack lumber, etc. Where I work we've got hundreds (if not thousands) of 'em laying around. Chances are this things is very well seasoned and has spent a long time in the 'yard. Have some fun with it, experiment a bit. It may work for bindings, or as a stringer in a neck lamination. It also would be great for some kindling if the other projects don't turn out as you expected. Enjoy! |

Guys....(hands waving gently in the air...with mystery).....with ancient chinese voice... I didn't pay for any of this...got 3 more of them yesterday while yall were posting on this thread. These things have issues but with some careful cutting I'll get some useful guitar stuff out of it. This pictures were taken with a camera phone so you really cant see the color.

whach out for the pith in cherry it has 'orable black streaks which may mess up binding strips. it looks very white on my computer you sure its cherry? anyway keep it your shop i am sure you will find just the right use for it if you keep it round long enough. Joel. |
