While perusing Patrick Leach's Tool Newsletter, I saw this and just had to have it. It measures in increments of 1/5 of a mm, has a reach of about 11.5mm or 4 1/2", and can be set to a specific setting. It looked like it might be useful for thicknessing tops and such for quick measuring. Mostly I just thought it was cool. I so love old, highly specialized tools, and that one is a real keeper. Nice!

that is beautiful, is it acurate over the whole scale?

when I lived in Cambridge there was a fantastic old antique tool shop near by in Ely that had everything from blunder-buss's to devon shovels. It had been a big boat building town many years ago and the array of of chisels was fantastic - beautiful silky steel. If only I had a use for them, unfortunately they were virtually all huge. I knew that if i bought one then i'd have ended up with hundreds!

If anyone is ever in that vicinity its well worth a look

I have checked it with my calipers, and it appears to be accurate all the way along the scale. It is, at least, accurate enough to use for rough thicknessing. It is easy to have at hand, and it is easy to see the fluctuations of the needle as you slide it across a thicknessed piece.

That is TOO cool! Gotta get one.

Also useful for measuring cranial bumps.
