I am a year and a half into this.
I have taken howard kleppers advice and studied all the basics, tools, techniques blah blah.

i have 3 boxes put together and feel comfortable with most of the aspects of the box.
i am now fitting necks and i am hitting a wall.

i am using the basic bolt on approach, have a couple butt joint necks and couple mortise and tenons.

I am using the basic threaded inserts that i got from grizzly: http://grizzly.com/products/Bolt-on-Nec ... -Set/H3374

I am looking for the best way to get the threaded inserts into the neck.
I tried drilling the whole a litt big, tapping the inserts in and then glue, but this is sloppy and inferior. A brief tutorial on the steps of drilling into the neck and how you get your inserts in nice and snug would be immeasurably valuable.

I can't figure out a way to scre them in. Maybe I am just missing something simple. please help.

You could screw the allen bolt all the way in it and use that to torque it in? I would add some glue also, to help the wood swell.

I have a different take on threaded insert installation than most here.
I drill a hole just snug to the outside diameter of the insert fill the hole with slow set epoxy and then thread the insert and bolt in,with extra nut above the insert to lock the bolt in place. Inner threads coated with wax to stop epoxy getting to the inside of the insert.
I believe this is actually stronger than having the outer threads on the insert cut up the wood fibres of the endgrain.
Gotta be epoxy though not just "glue"

I no longer use threaded inserts. I now use barrel bolts and I'm not looking back. Much simpler and more effective for me.

Jeff, I would have to do a bench test on this, but intuition tells me that the threading into the end grain or better yet into a dowel inlaid gross grain would have much higher shear strength than the epoxy to the wood provides.

But It really not a factor to me as I use blind dowel nuts

I would have to say that IMHO your intuition would be wrong at least in the case of screwing into endgrain, and probably even for screwing into a crossdowel.
Screws onto endgrain tend to chop up the wood fibres into short fragile segments.
This is why dowels are used extensively in joinery for such as rails to legs.
Using barrel nuts as you do is a great solution too but not for a staight butt joint heel with no tennon

well, i found a drill bit just shy of the size of the threaded inserts. i drilled, and lightly tapped on the inserts, then with an extra nut on the bolt screwed them in slowly. so whoever said that in whichever thread, thank you.

i just closed a box and finally, successfully have one with a neck bolted on. i am interested in refining my process now and doing what is easiest and best, so in the morning i am off to the borg to get some barrel bolts to try on one of the other boxes. but long story short i have another step in the process down, i have climbed over a major hill! now on to bridge placement and construction, finishing and setup.....
