Ya'll are gonna get tired of my V-Joint failures and successes, but finally I got one to the point that I can use it. After my prior, dunderheaded errors in cutting the slots, and ruining the previous efforts, I got one finished and posted it in my last thread. Finally, I have gotten it to the point where I think it will be acceptable. As David LaPlante pointed out, you don't know what the inside will look like after you start cutting things out.

Here we go. First, I got my off cuts from the back and sides, and bookmatched my Head and Back Plates, and glued them up.

Next, I laminated the two plates with black and white veneer, and prepared them for the headstock. Here is the back plate after cutting out for the V.

Did the same for the Head Plate, and drilled holes for toothpick guides.

Glued them on the headstock, then rough cut the headstock shape on the band saw.

The last step I got through was to carve the back side of the back of the headstock where it meets the neck. This is where I was worried I might find gaps that would not be acceptable for a good joint, but I think I'm OK. I put some Shellac on it to see the color. Still not finished, but wanted to see what I had. It's hard to tell in raw wood sometime, to me. Just a reminder, the neck shaft is Mahogany, and the Head piece is Spanish Cedar. Not as much contrast as I would have thought.

Continued on next post for the Scarf Neck update.

The Scarf Joint Neck was at the same place as the V-Joint when I last visited it. I have done pretty much the same processes with it.
Prepared the off cuts from the back (Bubinga - lightly figured)

Cut the veneers and laminated them up.

Glued them on the neck after preparing the top plate for the nut angle, and drilling the holes to register the plates on the head.

Rough cut the shapes on the band saw.

Here is the Scarf Joint on the side of the head. It's not too bad, and will be covered with the plate from the machines.

Here are the pair, awaiting the next steps of the process.

Thanks for looking.

Waddy - lookin' good!

On your scarf joint neck - the back plate obviously encroaches further towards the main neck shaft than the original plane of the scarf joint itself. Did you plane that area a little closer to final thickness before gluing on the back veneer?

Yes I did. I took about a 1/4" extra bite into the neck shaft portion. Here you go, I skipped that step in the pictures.

I keep finding uses for that little bull nose plane. It is a wonderful little tool, if sharp.
