Anyone got a toot or a good workflow for making a Florentine cutaway? How do you do it?

I thought I had at least a picture but it's not there.

Rod True has one he shared. I use my gobar deck to put the corner together, after first gluing the mahogany corner in there cut for the purpose using a Klemmsia clamp and little squaring jig.

Maybe Rod will chime in or you could do the SEARCH engine on this site.

Hi Mitch!

Hi Mitch,

Here's a post on how I do my florentine cutaway.

Just one very basic and stupid question - do you bend cutaway side on the bass side of a standard mold, then cut the short and long side from that?

Here is the way I have done it in the past. The instrument is very stable and simple to work with throughout the process. This article was originally published in Guitarmaker magazine. See http://www.wellsguitars.com/Articles/Cutaway_Article.htm.

Rod:
Great job BTW! Got that one saved to my tutorial folder. It looks like you did a butt joint on your florentine? Have you ever tried a mitre?

Your joint looks like this to me from the pix.

This is what I expected.

Am I seeing this right?

Billy,

Following the photo-documentary of Rod's it looks to me that his sides are mitred and are exactly like the picture you labelled "This is what I expected". His glue up jig has the slot for the long side extended which could make you think it was a hybrid butt/mitre joint but the photos of the edges of Rod's side and cutaway show mitres on both.

Yup Daves got it right.

The sides are mitred together, no butt joints here :)
