I have been working on a new project called Luthier Tips du Jour. These are small instructional video clips. Here are a couple of links. I would appreciate some feedback please.
The first is about scrapers and the second is on thickness sanding.

Robbie--

Both are really nicely presented. I especially enjoyed the clip of the scraper use and the way that you presented several ways of sharpening and burnishing the blades. Good show!

Nice tips Robbie. I really like the magnet on the scraper idea, I'll be using that one for sure.

Got to get me a better sander one of these days as the "Armstrong" feed system really sucks on mine laughing6-hehe

Robbie,

A significant improvement over your still pictures with voiceover. Good camera angles, clear
explanations of what you are doing (as usual). I like them a lot.

Robbie ! these are great tips.
The thing that frustrates me from the videos I´ve got right now are that "allthough its guitarbuilding videos" they miss the importante point of tooling ! what you showed on those 2 clips gave me lots !
So clips on how to proper use different toos would be soooo amazing to see ! like easy ways/differant ways to sharpen chisels, best uses for the different planes, finger, small block , larger etc. most videos show the luthier as he gets back with a perfekt neck, and put it to place, but not actually the ways to get it perfekt. also a clip that shows, the different tools needed for building in a newbie situation and a telling on what tool goes where etc.

Great vids!

I noticed you're only using one drum on the sander, and if I'm right, it's a double-drum unit.
Why is that?

Looking good, Robbie! Great info and well presented. Keep 'em coming!

Nice playing Tracy but I noticed that both videos had the same piece. If there are more videos, I would suggest keeping Tracy but playing some different pieces. [:Y:]

It is a double drum unit. However, I usually my shop manager prefers to only buy paper for one drum at a time. It works fine this way.

Oh, I am definitely keeping Tracy! He has officially become the theme music guy on most of my videos. The reason for having the same theme music is to keep a standard intro and exit theme going on all the Luthier Tips du Jour videos.
I have footage for about 15 or so of these little clips already shot. I just need to find the time to edit and produce them. There is a huge investment in time and energy to put together these little clips.
I want my next one to be on side bending by hand. I think ths would be very useful for alot of folks. Standby for that one.

These are super videos Robbie, Very well done and great explanations. It's nice to see the "how it's done" but it's even better to hear the "why it's done this way or that" if you catch my drift.

Hopefully you will be posting one on the French Polish method of applying shellac finishes. I've done a bit of this but I'm sure no expert, and I'm sure everyone would benefit from your expertise.

I totally agree with Lars; a lot of valuable information was imparted in those few minutes, a lot of luthier vids can be total egotistical waffle.

It's probably the best instructional clips I have seen anywhere on the web. Well done Robbie, and thank you for being generous in sharing information like this.

A couple of issues I was hoping we could discuss about the scraper demonstration. I went back through my notes from years ago and found two issues that Mario brought up on a different forum prior to OLF.

1) The idea of bending the scraper seems to cause a depression on the surface. I have used scrapers and have always tried to keep them flat...especially around areas like the sides where we want to keep everything as flat as possible...just like a plane.

2) Turning the hook on both sides of the blade can be dangerous should ones hands slip. That edge just below our fingers can be as sharp as a razor. For that reason, I have kept an edge on one side only.

Very nice. I have seen several Tutes on scrapers. None of them have addressed sharpening the one seen at the opening of your video. The curvy paisley looking one. Whats the trick to those? Is tutorials comming on those?
