| Post subject: | Peg Head Logo by Air Brush? |
Hi Folks, I'm working on my 3rd build and seek advice applying my headstock logos. Headstock logos on my first two builds were waterslide decals. I am not satisfied because the decal edges still show after several applications of Tru-Oil. So I am thinking of getting a stencil and airbrushing the logo (my last name). Has anyone had experience? Thanks for any help. |

Ron, since I wouldn't expect Tru-Oil to build up, did you consider masking around the head and spraying a bunch of coats of clear lacquer over the decal, finishing up with just one or two of flat lac to match the oil sheen? Even with careful stencil work you're going to see a step around the edge of the paint, and you may want to clear-coat to protect the paint. |

It is a funky look. Harmony and most of the cheapie American guitars from the early 20th C used this technique. Here is a picture of a Harmony stencil (and an actual guitar that used this stencil). I wound up with about a dozen of these stencils from a dusty corner at the Harmony going-out-of-business sale in Chicago in 1976. |

If you want it really clean you could try pad printing. It's what most manufacturers of products use to transfer logos and such. You could make your logo and buy the pad part and try it by hand. |
