The cocobolo bridge discussion got me thinking. Does anyone have a chart that lists the average density of commonly used tonewoods?

Jeremy,

I have seen a number of these list around over the years however I question the accuracy of any of them. Wood can change dramatically in density from log to log within the same species.

There was one posted at the Taylor forum, it had about 10 woods on it. More like what they sound like,

But specific gravity, weight, hardness should be available in an online google search.

Keyword here is "average" density and/or other physical properties in a given species. All research charts will reflect the "average" data collected, but not reflect the variances within a given species as Kim mentions. The USFS lab has pretty much established a variance of plus or minus 20% which means two otherwise identical pieces of mahogany on your work bench can weight as much as 40% different. This is true in practice and is why we evaluate each piece of wood on it's own merits when selecting wood. Case point being not all Sitka tops are created equal.

There certainly are extremes of course. I have some Spanish Cedar in the shop the pound for pound equals and rosewood!! All and all a 40% spread on average is impressive is it not?

Hi Howard.....I officially and technically took an early (first) retirement this spring and have been slowly palletizing the shop for a move to North Georgia where I'm closing on a house soon. Not sure what "retirement" means...something to do with stress reduction ...but not posting on guitar forums seems to help [headinwall] Looking at purchasing a large vacuum veneer press to lay up sawn Amboyna and Thuya burl veneers on Russian ply as a "hobby". :)
