My wife and I stayed in Houston through the storm with no damage. However, due to the the power outage we drove up to Dallas the day after Ike. The power situation looks bleak

As far as the other OLFers I can only speculate

Steve Kinnaird lives in Nacogdoches, which is about 2 hrs north of Houston, so I doubt he got too much damage. He is almost certainly without power.

Barry Daniels lives in the Woodlands, which from what I hear didn't get hit too hard. Again, no power.

Steve Walden, if he stayed in Leauge city he got hit hard. I hope he and his family are OK.

We drove up to the Dallas area too. I think the power in The Woodlands was restored yesterday, but it seems its a little unstable as I heard it went off in some areas again last night.

Matt, There was actually more damage in The Woodlands than you would think. Lots of big trees came down and some hit homes. Two houses right across the street from us got hit. We were very lucky. We may or may not be going back today. Still playing it by ear.

I hope Steve W. came thru it OK and the other Texas luthiers also are all fine.

Hey, guys,

I just got back from Texas. As some of you know, I am a flight paramedic full time. Our company has had several helicopters based in San Antonio to help with the effort there. Things are being ramped down now regarding the aircraft support, so I got sent home after being there for a few days. I did fly one shift, from San Antonio to Brazaria, and then to Galveston at UTMB hospital. Galveston looks like it got hit pretty hard, and UTMB had its first floor flooded. We flew in before daylight, and it was pretty obvious that generator power was the only sources of electricity, as I noted that there was very sporadic lighting on the island. The hospital is on its generator as well, and is operating in disaster mode. No AC, apparently no running water. Flying out of Glvstn and back to San Antone with a patient, daylight revealed boats on the side of streets, all kinds of stuff in the marina and a general mess everywhere, and it looked like a ghost town. Many of the houses I saw were still standing, but the whole place looked like the tempestuous sea had paid it a visit, placing its foot upon the land.

I'd also like to say that we were greeted with much support.........TEXAN STYLE! Dang fine bunch of folks.

Please continue to keep our Texan friends in our minds, thoughts and prayers.

And if you are ever in San Antonio, go visit the Alamo. You won't be dissappointed.

Howdy from League City! I just found this thread and as Bob C says we came through really well. Have a co-worker that her mom had 4 ft in their home in Seabrook just five miles from where I work. Nothing worse than the muck left. She said they went for a walk afterward and found their baby pictures up to a half mile from her mom's house.

If you see a house that survived on Galveston's west end or the Bolivar Peninsula it is probably because it may be new construction. The newer building codes and construction methods are so much stronger.

Folks like Barry and Matt who live further north have a lot more mature trees than we do here south of downtown Houston. This accounts for most of the damage to the power lines and houses.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why some people think its OK to put a generator in a closed garage.... They found a family of three dead from CO poisoning.

My wife insisted we buy a generator and a window unit air conditioner which came in very handy after the storm passed. We only needed them for three days, but, they kept our food frozen and our bedroom cool. Although, a cool front came through Sunday morning after the storm and we had dry air with temps in the low 60's in the morning and low 80's in the pm. Of course, the generator was outside and not by an open window.

We got alot of wind and rain with power outages throughout the area, I am north of Nacogdoches where Steve is, but we all survived. Most of the refugees displaced from the gulf coast left today headed back to the area.
