| Post subject: | Tru Oil necks |
I've decided to try Tru-Oil finish on the neck of a prototype I'm building and am looking for any tips from those who've used it. Best pore filler, sealer, # coats, application method, etc., etc. Any help is greatly appreciated. |

Zpoxy filler sand back to wood and 8 sessions of padded on tru-oil |

Tru -oil sells a sealer I used instead of z-poxy.A lot easier to use.Also every other neck that I`ve done using z-poxy,starts to feel grainy after a few weeks of playing time.The neck with the sealer has been my most played guitar,for about 6 months now,and still smooth as silk.This is the only way I`ll finish a neck in the future.To me the way a neck feels when it`s played is SUPER IMPORTANT. Tru Oil works well over shellac. Don't know if there's a compatibility problem with stains, but you could seal (and/or pore fill) with shellac just to be sure. Also, when applying TO, less definitely is more. I did 4-5 thin coats a day and made sure to wipe off any excess and and got a super smooth satin finish on my last guitar. In earlier attempts I put down heavier coats and was less careful about removing excess and the result was an uneven gloss. |

I had the same fuzziness issue with Tru-oil over ZPoxy James. I did not sand back to bare wood though. That might do the trick. Does the Tru-Oil filler do a good job on the pores? I Micromeshed the fuzzy neck a couple of times and it seems OK for the moment. Terry |

I also got a little fuzziness after Z-poxy pore fill and 8 coats of Tru Oil. I heard that the Tru Oil sealer is excellent also. I put the Tru Oil on too thick. I am going to resand it and try again, this time thinner coats. |

Tru oil also comes in a spray can - was considering trying that. I've applied with fingers, and a pad, but it seems to get tacky quite quickly. Thought several thin spray coats might provide more even and smooth coverage. Anyone have experience on this one? |

The sealer will fill the pores with enough coats,I used about 3 of sealer and 9 0r 10 of tru-oil.Of course this was on Hondo ,which isn`t nearly as hard to fill as most Rosewoods. James |
