Thought that you all might like to see the new Dragon rosette. Its for one of the trio of SE117 style guitars that I'm working on. This was chosen by my daughter, who determined that it should be green. It was actually easier to make than I expected.

How's this?

I'm not used to how this software treats photos.

It is a rare thing for me to want to copy ....

There is someone that would love if I did my take on your idea. I started giving her dragons a long while ago, I promise to only make one and not for profit.

Seems to me that it would make an excellent BRAND/MODEL SIGNATURE.....

Needless to say, but I will anyway, yuppers I like it!

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

I didn't take photos to document the construction, as my camera was lost (at a wedding), then found, then transferred to my brother's place, but hasn't yet gotten back home.

Here's a simplified technical explanation:
-first, draw out the perimeter circles that you have to work within.
-draw your design within the space allowed.
-make copies of your drawing.
-the scales are pre-made 1/4" wood doweling, these ones were Hickory, but other material would work. Plane two facets off of the dowel so that it results in a pie shaped "dowel", slice off segments.
-use wood glue, (a little dab will do ya) and glue the pie segments directly onto a copy of the drawing, set out the center line of the scales along the length of the dragon body. Then work your way out from there.
-when the glue is dry, use a chisel and trim the scales back to the body shape line. Cut straight down.
-cut out the rest of the pieces, some are simply cut with a fret saw (not a fret cutting saw, the one that's like a fine cutting coping saw).
-the fins along the back are made from a long block of wood. Draw the fins out along the length of the wood. Drill a series of holes, but not all the way through the wood, which determine the small tight curve at the back of the fin, then cut the front line using the bandsaw. Flip the wood onto its side and cut a slice off. Fit and glue each fin in place onto your drawing.
-Prepare your rosette channel as usual. I used the a few bands of wood along the inner and outer perimeter to prevent bleeding into the soundboard.
-Finish gluing all the remaining pieces onto your drawing.
-glue the drawing in place directly into the rosette channel. The paper holds all the little bits of wood in place, and as its wood fiber anyway, glues well into the channel.
-once the glue is dry, fill the gaps with epoxy tinted to the colour of choice. When its cured to A stage, that is before its rock hard, plane and scrape it flat. If you wait too long, then it cures to B stage and is much harder to clean up.
-the green colour was added with thinned acrylic paint. Water colour, or other wood dyes or stains would work as well. The red parts are mahogany and didn't receive any colour.

I hope that this helps. It really was a lot easier than it looks! The whole thing only took 4-5 hours, but I didn't really count the hours. It serves no purpose counting the hours in the pursuit of art.

All she said was that she wanted a dragon going around the rosette, and left it to me to develop the design and make it happen. She seems to have a lot of faith that I can actually accomplish that sort of thing! She gave me the thumbs when I did the reveal.

Now I have to figure out how to make a tiger leaping out of the back...

WOW!! Probably the most creative rosette I've ever seen. Great
artistic talent as well as woodworking skills. Your daughter is lucky
to have such a great Dad. [:Y:] [:Y:]

Great design and execution, Douglas. You should have this in the tutorial section, too.
