Post subject:  an ode to pores

Pores, pores, a pain in the rear they are,
Tubes necessary for life, but unsightly on a guitar.
Tried this, tried that, and all to no avail,
The thing I mostly want to do is lament, scream and wail.

On mahogany and sapele it all goes fine
Rosewood of all types, that is why I pine.
Cavernous and huge, the pores seem to be,
After filling them up they are looking back at me.

Zpoxy and oil based, both I have tried,
Squishing and raking and then I sighed.
Do it one more time, to myself I say
Pack it in, rake it on and wait another day.

Try again and wish for good luck,
I think I’m going to run over this guitar with my truck!
Neck sets, level frets, we all have our pain,
But pore filling is this guitar maker’s bane!

Pores, pores everywhere, does this stuff shrink?
Pores, pores everywhere, a pain in the butt I think!

Obviously I am bored with nothing to do between lacquer coats.

Brad that's good.

Have you tried CA to fill pores? It works excellent and you only have about 1/2 hour to wait to sand back.

So, you don't feel my pain, Hesh? pfft laughing6-hehe

Rod, I have not tried it or the water based filler. Epoxy works great for me on sapele or mahogany. I just still have trouble with Rosewoods, this Brazilian one I'm working on in particular. I finally sprayed lacquer and sanded add nausem and got the thing filled. I had a line of pores showing along the black grainlines, and I couldn't even get them drop filled for some reason....it was crazy! I went crazy (hence the original post)! Lacquer seemed to avoid the showing pores when sprayed! [headinwall] It's slick now, though! [:Y:]

My take on pore filling is perhaps not something most people would go along with, but here goes...

I found that the best two ways of pore filling (for me) are using LMI's microbead filler, or using pumice and shellac. The nice thing about the microbead filler is that you can add some latex artist's paints to color the stuff, and get it to match most woods pretty easily. It doesn't seem to shrink back much at all. I guess that's the advantage of the little glass beads or whatever they are.

The pumice and shellac method is more work, but you can get great results with little to no shrink back.
