Anyone got any pics of oak binding on say maybe walnut or EIRW? I'm sure it'll bend and all. Just want to see other's take on design.

Also, I have a bunch of oak, walnut, EIRW, maple, and BRZ RW veneers. I was thinking of using these for purflings. The veneers aren't flat, and they're very old (split pretty easy, esp the brz rw). Anyone make any of this stuff up?

Sorry, can't help you Terry.

I can't believe we used to burn oak by the truckload.

Why not? It's great wood for the wood stove...burns long and hot.

Terry, My guess is that filling the pores in oak purflings would be a pain.

Terry, I remember Mario having said that he's used oak for bindings before. You might want to check with him by email or the MIMF.

Why not laminate some of those veneers to make bindings, especially the BRW. Just have to be carefull sanding and scraping them once installed.

No pics on EIRW or walnut, but here's a Honduran mahogany dread I bound in white oak. You've probably seen this one, I've shown it a few times here. I've got plenty more, been thinking about doing one on rosewood myself.

This was actually my #1. Man, those purfling miters stick out like a sore thumb to me now! Most of 'em turned out real good, but that one in the last pic...ugh.... (The one in the middle pic is actually tighter than it looks in the picture.)

I have used oak for binding several times and it looks GREAT. It bends easy and is easy to finish too. I prefer the white oak, but I have used red oak too.
