Hey guys.

just wondering how you would bind with plastic? meaning: should i fit the binding first, then wick super glue into the joint and let capillary take care of it?
Or should i use a poly cement or UHU or hhg and fit it like wood binding would be fitted?

Cheers

Jonny

Duco cement works well. However this type of glue will dissolve a little of the binding, so be sure it's fully set up (at least a day) before scraping back.

With the CA, I sealed the top edges to keep the CA from wicking into the end grain, which can cause stains, and taped only every inch or so and wicked in CA only in the areas between the tape. Took off the tape and wicked CA into the remaining areas. It's a lot neater that way - you don't end up with a bunch of tape glued to your guitar with CA.

I use Duco. I have the LMI contact glue but had more trouble using it than plain ole duco. I think the trick with Duco is to not use "too much". I run a thin bead on the ledge of the wood. If I am doing a multi binding, I will run a small bead on the next piece too. I then rotate the binding into place pushing the glue as I go. I don't really lay the binding in, I roll it around the the guitar tightly to push the glue forward. I hold it in place and then tape as normal.

i was on a UK forum and this topic popped up, and one guy said he used hhg and another pva....

alas I am in the UK, so i dont think lmi can ship said cement to me can they?

is it an impact adhesive? if so, would any generic contact adhesive work?

Thanks

I've used CA and epoxy. They are both somewhat messy, but they work and they are available locally.

Generic contact adhesive will not work.

This is probably different than most, but when I use plastic bindings I don't tape and wick glue, instead I tack the end with CA and using pipettes I add glue to the strip as I go along and hold it in place for a few seconds, plastic bends easy and I can get a really tight joint this way and don't use nearly as much glue. I've done this on several instruments with out having to seal the channel first. Also reduces the need for a lot of tape on delicate tops.
