I finally decided to make another fox style bender so I have 1 always setup to do venetian cutaways. ....
Can I see some cauls and presses? I know there is to be some real clever ideas out there....and if there's is a better way, I'm game!

I finally decided to make another fox style bender so I have 1 always setup to do venetian cutaways. .... Can I see some cauls and presses? I know there is to be some real clever ideas out there....and if there's is a better way, I'm game!

For cutaways I bend the back half and the waist in my bender and do the cutaway on a hot pipe. |

I have a press that attaches to the bender but that ties up the bender for a while. If I build 2 I can do both sides at once!

I just made one and bent my first Venetian cutaway. I used a rolling pin for a caul and made the radius of the cutaway to match. The ribbon holds down the lower spring steel slat so it won't spring up when taking the side out. I creased a couple of mahogany practice sides before getting the hang of applying the pressure. Thanks to John Hall's web site I learned that you have to hold up the end of the sandwich to keep tension on the lower slat while tightening the caul.

Check out the building narrative here. FWIW, the build is at Huss and Dalton. The cutaway bending form is very near the end of a VERY long, single html page full of pic...so it might take a while to load. It's a single stand alone "second stage" bender caul used with a heating blanket. I've used it 3 times in the last year and have had great success. I like it because I can focus on the waist bend first. THEN I can focus on the cutaway bend by itself, rather than performing both bends at the same time. It's also very simple to make and doesn't take up as much room as a second bender, more steel slats, etc. Joe |
