I have been using precut neck for the first 3 guitars now and I want to try my hand at making a neck from scratch. Most of the process seems pretty straight forward but the angle of the cheeks, when the tenon is cut. I have notice that many use a jig designed by Paul Woolson. I have seem plenty of pics, but I have been unable to find any plans. Does Paul make these and sell them? any other suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Richard |

Richard: I build necks with scarf joint and glued up heel block. After the scarf is done and head plate glued on to give me a referance for measurment,I cut the end of the tail block to approximately one and a half degrees and the correct length for the neck and tenor. Then to the table saw,set up fence and depth of cut for the sides of the tenon.Put one side of blank ,on end and cut, reverse blank 180 degrees and run another cut.Sides of tenon now cut.Lay blank on side ,end to fence and set for the cheek distance and depth .Run one cut ,turn blank over and run second. Tenon now cut.Find this works for me until I have to fine tune for neck set as the guitar is reaching completion. Hope you can follow this, don't have pictures and don't know how to make drawings here.Someone else will no doubt be able to give you another better way Good luck,Tom. |

Can put a shim under the neck if making a jig like stew mac notes with their templates. Can do a neck with no m & t and cut angle when cutting out neck join to body for bolt on. can make jig with little angle in it. several options |

I do it pretty much as Tom does, making all the cuts on a table saw. When it comes to the 'cheeks' I tilt the blade 5 degrees (so the shoulders fit snugly) and set the miter gauge at 1.5 degrees (for neck set angle). Great care must be taken to repeat the cuts on the other side of the neck. Joe |

Dovetail saw and chisel...I had the Woolson jig but by the time I set up that or a tablesaw, the DT saw and chisel method was quicker (and quieter) ![]() |
