Do you notch the x brace before or after radiusing?

Before. Why, because way learned at school and way done in both shops worked at. Works well so no need to change.

I do it after. That way it's easier to level the unradiused side for the cap.

Neither - notches are overrated....

:D

Seriously like most things in guitar building there are lots of ways to do it.

Currently I radius both X legs and then notch. Also, currently, I am gluing the X brace in place one leg at a time where I used to notch, assemble, radius and glue the X brace as an assembly. With only 2 hands and the time constraints of HHG one leg at a time, properly positioned, is a lot less demanding.

I know better than post before coffee and lack of sleep. My thought process was radius first then nothch, but didn't come out that way.

process for me is cut thickness with tablesaw, sand to final thickness, mark and cut radius, the cut ends for tuck into lining, then notch. I glue in the bridge plate first, then fit X brace to that. Second brace put in is the utb. X, then rest.

After, since I use a fixture that bends the brace to cut the radius, a la Sylvan Wells.

One brace the notch is in the flat, one it is in the radius. Because of this I do it after so that I can fine tune the notches so that they fit tight and square to the radius. It would seem to me that if you do it ahead of time you run a risk of not having the bottoms of the notches fitting up flush to each other.

I did it ahead of time when all sides were square so things would be easier. Of course, when I radiused the braces the notches didn't fit any longer. I wondered if there was a way around that, but everyone seems to solve it by notching the braces after the radius. Thanks.
