Hi Folks, Vince and I have been talking and I convinced him to post a little history on this
amazing find. Below is a breif story about some of the Port Orford that Vince has to offer.
PS, im on the list for a few sets when they are ready to go! ;)

A rare find,

While exploring a friend’s property I happened upon a rare find. An
old growth Port Orford cedar tree over 3 1/2 foot in diameter that had
fallen over, most likely in a wind storm. I can’t be sure just how long ago
the tree fell over but it had to be decades ago. All the bark had rotted off
and there was a thick layer of moss growing on it, and on the uphill side
several inches of the tree were below ground level. I estimate that the tree
has been on the ground for at least 50 maybe 100 years.
Now I had to see if the tree was sound, so I went to work digging a hole under
the tree so I could cut a round out of it. Sure enough it was sound, and after counting the
growth rings I found out it was 352 years old not counting the sap wood that
had completely rotted off. So the tree was around 400 years old when it
died.
I enlisted the help of my son to help me split the three foot+ rounds
into wedges and carry them the 1/4 mile to the nearest road. It took us 4
days to do this. Next I went to work sawing the wedges into billets to be
resawn into tops. I have sawn several billets into tops and stickered them to
remove what little ingested moisture they have in them from the tree laying
on the ground under a damp dense forest canopy for decades. The tops I have
sawn have been on stickers for about a month. They are extremely clean with
no runout incredibly stiff, and have exceptional tonal qualities. They are
all at least 3a+ and many are master grade quality. I have a limited supply
of these tops available; I am presently taking orders for tops for jumbo
acoustic tops to ukuleles. If you are interested in acquiring some of these
tops you can contact me through my web site pacificcoastwoods.net or follow
the link at the top of the OLF.

Thanks!
