Post subject:  Rerouting finished Martin

Hi all ,my first post, Jim is the name. I just purchased a newer Martin project fixer. It had taken a hit and both X braces were split beyond repair and top was cracked below the bridge. The owner in a attempt to DIY removed the back binding and stopped there.I have since repaired what was needed and have re glued the back on. Now I am at a crossroads. When the owner removed the back binding he was a bit sloppy and left some tear-out here and there where the binding met the sides. I am thinking of rerouting the binding channel to a larger height ,say .042", to eliminate the tear-out and get a clean line. I have never routed a finished side and was hoping someone has and can offer me advise on what to look out for -special bit etc. I use the Stew-mac router guide with a Dremel to do my normal routing. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Jim

this can be tricky . the heat can melt the lacquer and then the bit can chip it. Try putting masking tape at the area and rout , The tape should help with the chipping and possible bearing slip
Still expect to do some finish touch up

John thank you for the quick reply. There are ,unfortunately ,enough of these tear -outs to at least attempt to strike a clean line. Should I cut through the tape or run the tape at .042" and any particular bit that would give me a better leg up. Thanks Jim
