So I decided the other day that while I liked the rosette on #7, that it did not match the rest of the guitar's color scheme. So, now that the top is on and the soundhole has been cut out and bound, I was in a tight spot. My wife always tells me to try to make sure that I am "happy" with my guitars, so I knew that I had to get the old rosette out and put in a new one.

I always save the sound hole cuts outs, claiming that some day I will finish them and bring them home as "luthier coasters". So, I used the sound hole cut out from this guitar and tacked it in with super glue, trying to make sure it was perfectly centered and staying put. I then routed out the rosette with great success and began work on the new one. This time, I used the same radial zebrawood purfling that is on the top. Originally I thought the cocobolo radial rosette would be okay because it was radial. Yet, the colors were just too far off.

After about 3 hours or bending wood against the grain and inhailing way too much superglue fumes, I had completed the rosette. It is not perfect, as I am human, but I am happy wit it. And, it matches the guitar's color scheme perfectly.

That's a tricky job! (....one I don't think I'd attempt unless compelled to do so....)
Glad it worked out well for you! Nice work!

Cheers
John

Corky, that is an Adi top. It is a lower grade top, but this guitar is one that I am doing on a budget.

Chris, at guitar number 7 you might not want to settle for the quality of that work. Budget or not, I don't think you're going to be happy with it down the line. 10 to 1 you're capable of doing better. Honestly.

Yep, the first one looked good. But the redo has a lot of uneveness on the inner purfling.

A couple years ago I used the same method as Todd posted for re-routing a rosette. Works perfectly.
