Post subject:  Interesting dovetail problem

Hi Guys,
After watching John's 5 part video, (BTW John, excellent video, thanks !!)
I just fit a dovetail neck to a Dred, I'm quite pleased with the results,
The chalk on the tenons shows approx 95% contact, the cheek seams looks great,
the angle appears to be right on and the neck is dead to nuts straight.
One problem,
Its .050 too deep !!
Is there a painless way to fix this??
I'm thinking a porous fiberglass tape, something that will alow the neck to shim up
and allow glue to permeate the joint.
Am I dreaming ??

Just add a shim to the neck.

John, I'm gonna need something very thin.
I guess I can make one out of some 1/64 ply.

If I understand your problem correctly, your neck slides in just a hair (.050) too deeply? One solution is to glue a thin shim to the dovetail 'pin', and after it's dry, sand it down till the surface of the neck is flush with the top. I believe you'd have to add so little to the pin that it wouldn't appreciably affect the alignment of the neck's centerline with the centerline of the top. If it would, add equal thickness (or rather thinness) shims to each side of the dovetail pin instead of one shim to one side. I hope that I understood your question, & my answer is clear enough. good luck.

Mike, yes I will have to add a very thin shim to both sides.

A plane shaving is an easy way to get a nice thin shim.

I'd use some of the same wood (mahogany) super glue and shape to fit. No plywood though.
