A couple of lads, who claim some sort of relationship to me ;) , asked if I could make them a ukulele each. They are both competent guitar players and have a number of my guitars, some of which you have seen on the forum. Well I've never made a ukulele before, they have been projects that were constantly put on the back burner, but this time my hands had been forced. So first thing to do was to cry help to Dave White and get any advice I could, armed with his sage teachings, I assembled the components, all of which would be from my scrap box or are recycled timber, no virgin wood was harmed in the making of these ukes. I used my normal guitar neck design, with neck extension supporting the fingerboard.

They are Concert size and use the Torres FE19 plantilla scaled down to 11" body length.

All of the woods are from the scrap bin, they are:

Mahogany B&S. (neighbour's old window frames)
Tops are one-piece, one is WRC, the other Lutz (Shane's packing grade!).
Necks, Mahogany.
Binding, headplates and rosettes, English cherry.
Fingerboards and bridges, Rio rosewood.
Tuners are Grover.

Just as it should be for ukes. They're fine little beggars. What do you think of the Grover tuners?

Nice Ukes, Colin!

I really enjoy seeing projects made from recycled materials. Even more so when they look this good.

I did a series of three tenors a few years back with domestic cherry scraps and VG fir for the tops. Since I used the same Grover tuners, I am also curious of your opinion of them. I liked the price, but they just seemed pretty sloppy compared to the Gotoh minis I put on my first build.

Thanks,

Mark
