Anyone compared Dunlop and Jescar fretwire. I'm thinking about changing to a larger wire, and they both offer a nice fat/high wire. I saw a number of classicals with big wire at GFA, and folks seem to like that. I thought it'd be worth a try, even if not for every guitar. I know the Dunlop wire is twice as expensive. Any reason why? |

I guess, like other things, brand is what controls the price. However at about $104 per pound vs <$50 seems like a lot to me. Thanks, Todd. I noted that Jescar has one at about the same size as D 6100. |

I bought a large roll of Dunlop wire years ago, and I bought it by asking for "standard Martin fret-wire". What # did I buy? |

Not to hijack, but I find this chart invaluable when trying to sort through all the different types of fretwire. http://www.lutherie.net/fret.chart.html (I copied it into excel & keep track of where I used each) |

Thanks for the link Dave that is a good information. I installed Dunlop 6100 on my Cocobolo wedge as that is what J.B. requested and found they were a pain to install, the tang was not square to the base of the fret in some places, but once they were in they are real nice frets. |

Well, I just ordered 5 lbs of Jescar FW55090 which is the same size, exactly as Dunlop 6105. The difference - I got 5 lbs including shipping for less than the price of the minimum order of 2 lbs of Dunlop. I have at least one source that tells me Jescar's Nickel Silver wire is a bit harder than Dunlop and has a squarer transition from the tang to the crown at the T junction, which reduces the amount one needs to bevel the fret slots. I'm sure beveling is still good, though, for re-fret ease. If you buy 5 lbs, the price drops by nearly $10 per lb. I figured saving $50 was worth figuring out what I'm going to do with it. It could be a lifetime supply! |
