Post subject: | baritone 8 string..ready to start again! |
Hi everybody, here's Andrea from Italy again..as always sorry for the language! I'm ready to start a new project based on Taylor GT-8 The scale will be 27.105 or 668,5 mm, body shape Taylor GS, 14th fret neck-body joint, sitka or italian red spruce top, indian rosewood back/sides, ebony fingerboard and bridge. Now I'm in the planning stage..and thinking about top bracing I've encountered some issues for bridgeplate placement, here's an image that shows some approx placement and measurements..what do you think? way too far from X or soundhole? I didn't find so much on google about baritone bracing..thats a standard GS bracing thanks and greetings from Italy! Andrea |

Interesting. The biggest thing that jumps out to me is that the X doesn't cross over the bridge at all, it's very close but I would move the X brace back so the arms of the X cross over the back corner of your bridge wing. This will also make the bridge plate smaller which IMO is a good thing. |

Well, I would shift the finger braces too. I like my top finger brace to be near the front of the bridge with the back finger brace to be behind the bridge slightly. Tonebars, I`d move the lower tone bar down a bit but that`s just me.... Draw it all out again but make sure the X braces crosses over the wings of the bridge. You want to make a 8 string so you`re going to have more tension too remember. Place the sound hole based on where the fretboard lands, not based off the Taylor plan. Make sure you draw your fretboard out too as my guess is the sound hole will have to be moved down with the longer scale. |

Very useful and clear, a precious help! The fingerboard will stop at 20th fret so the soundhole begins there, am I right? thanks Rod! |

Yes within a couple mm of the end of the fretboard you can start your soundhole edge, place center based off the edge and size of soundhole you want to use. Locate bridge next then the rest of the braces. |

If you have 20 frets, then the soundhole edge is about the 21st fret .. |

Nice work, Andrea!! Also, I'm jealous of your setup - looks like a pretty professional set of tools. One thing on posting pictures - after you upload a picture, right next to that file, there's a button which says something like "place photo in sequence" or something like that. Place the cursor wherever you want the photo in your post, and you can sequence the photos however you want. Keep us posted on your progress. |

Thank you Cory! now I understand why I mess with photos uploading ![]() I've built the most of my jig, and always buy the best tool I can afford! Ciao! Andrea |

I'm planning to build one with go kart axes and my question is: are these rods easy to thread or need a professionist to do this? thanks ciao dall'Italia! |

On the right side you need left handed threads on the rod and on the left side you need right handed threads. |

Thanks Ken! Do you think I can try to thread the rod or is better to ask a shop to do the job? |

No but I can purchase the tools at local store, I'm wondering if with hobbistic tools I can thread this kind of rod Thanks |

Post subject: | Re: baritone 8 string..ready to start again! |
If you are cutting the threads with dies you will need one left hand and one right hand die. Depending on the hardness of the rods I think you should be able to thread them yourself. But buying dies for rods 3/4" or larger it may be cheaper to just have a professional do it. Someone who already had the tools could be done in no time at very little cost |
