Post subject:  Is this Claro?

Was given this board, got one set out of it which I really like. 30 years old or so, I'm told some flavor of Walnut. RIngs well, slightly better than my Black Walnut. Sides have a small knot, but otherwise equally beautiful. My guess is Claro?

Either way, thinking it'll make a swell L-00.

You could just say it was Claro and nobody would argue...looks like it. Most of the Claro I've gotten was darker but I have limited experience with it. It should be easy to easily identify as Walnut at least...by the smell.

It looks like Claro to me.

Looks like orchard Claro to me. Not all Claro is darker. Color is dependent on the mineral content of the soil the trees grow in. You can see the English walnut graft at the right side of this set - a dead giveaway.

Ah, not knowledgeable enough to recognize the graft. Thank you. There is a small crack/check near the graft that will be out of the pattern, and a small worm hole or two in the same neighborhood. Other than that, any fatal flaws?

Definitely not cardboard. My first guitar used a figured Hog back that DID tap like cardboard, and it turned out pretty amazing. Can't seem to get it back from my buddy, so go figure... I also have these two 000 babies on the bench, made from Otterhound's Black Walnut, that also does not tap like cardboard. Anxious to see how they sound!
