Post subject:  Cardinal finish questions?

I just purchased some cardinal clear nitro finish.. I see there is a shelf life of one year unopened can? Is there true and if so I have a lot to deal with for those in Canada that use this product. Also what is the recipe for spraying i.e. mix with DA etc? Also do you cut the sealer as well or spray directly out of the can?

Thanks

Blake

Always best to start with the manufacturers suggested application via the TDS

One year? That surprises me. I assumed nitro would have a much longer shelf life than that... idunno

That's what the label says. One year with an expiration date on each container with a tracking number. Do others keep it much longer?
Thanks

Mix with DA? wow I didn't know you could do that. Can you really do that? I use a slow lacquer thinner, The dang stuff costs almost as much a the lacquer but it works good.

As Ukulele Mike said, use lacquer thinner to cut the Cardinal, not denatured alcohol. I've had good results with a 3:1 ratio of lacquer to thinner. I was warned by a pro finisher to hold the gun about 18" away from the work surface to avoid "microbubbles". Discovered that it was sound advice after I forgot once and held the gun closer. As far as expiration, I can't help. I use more than one gallon a year.

I spray sealer straight from the can.

I Was talking to Dave Nichols at the symposium about cardinals new high solids lacquer that he was using. The product he described to me sounded like a pre cat lacquer based on certain behavior. While one year would be a long shelf life for a pre cat its feasible.

I have some lacquer that is 10 years old and it still works fine.
