Post subject:  Looking for a luthier who can resaw in the DC area
Hi everyone.

I recently purchased several boards of rosewood for a sustainable guitar project I’ve undertaken. I’ve had a really hard time finding someone in the Washington, DC, area that can resaw the wood in preparation for making guitar sides and backs.

I have four boards that are between 3 and 4 feet long, between 10 and 18 inches wide, and about 1” thick. I’m looking to have them resawn length-wise for sheets that are 3mm to 4mm thick for the purposes of making backs and sides. I have attached pictures. There are two more smaller pieces as well.

Note: The largest piece is flat sawn in the middle, so I don't mind splitting it down the middle if it's too wide for a planer (I can still get sides off the quarter/rift sawn sides of the board).

The wood itself is really nice and from Florida where it is an invasive species, so good to cut down.

Is there anyone in the DC area who has a large enough saw and could take on this project?

When I lived up there I used to go to a place called Colonial Hardwoods in Springfield. They were only 15 minutes away from me and I really miss that place. I've had them resaw for me on several occasions and while you are there you can browse through tens of thousands of board feet of beautiful stuff. Not luthiers per se but they know their stuff.

I actually tried Colonial--they said they couldn't do it. I also tried Smoot's.

Oh shucks, sorry about that. Back in the day they used to do that stuff. That's too bad.

Invasive rosewood growing in Florida?!?! Any idea what species it is? Has anyone else heard of this?

The rosewood in florida I have seen that looks like that picure was called by locals there dalbergia sisso. I have had a few pieces sent to me that were turning square sized. I didn't really think it had the density of most rosewoods I have seen, but I will admit I did not measure it. I think that piece pictured would make some interesting guiitars.
