With a satin finish I sometimes have used SMs transparent mylar and used 1200 grit on an ROS

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I've been doing something similar to Colin. Still trying to find the right grit or steel-wool combination to match the satin. But I find as long as the gloss is removed from the pickguard it doesn't show much. No aware of a ready made source.
